Making a difference to the people of Medway
Council tax & benefits
Benefits are available to those on low incomes and Medway Council's online calculator provides a simple and effective way for residents to see whether they are entitled to help with paying their council tax. Through answering a few simple questions, you can find out whether you can receive financial help.
If you are struggling to pay your council tax bills then the Council will work with you to help pay them. If you've received a reminder notice then the Council may be able to help you make alternative arrangements and it is possible to pay council tax by instalments if you're sent a final notice.
The Council can also help with advice on rented accommodation, social housing or temporary housing if you are at risk of becoming homeless.

Help with debt
A debt advice service has been set up in partnership with the Citizen's Advice Bureau to help those who are experiencing debt problems and a guide to dealing with debt can be found here.
Gaining employment
Residents looking for work can receive help through Employ Medway Advice Centre, in Chatham. The centre aims to help people back into work if they have recently lost their job.
Business
Small and medium sized businesses rely on invoices being paid on time. This is why Medway Council pays 50% of our invoices within 10 days and 80% of invoices within 20 days.
The Small Business Rate Relief Scheme provides discounts to small businesses occupying property with a rateable value of less than £15,000. Currently 1,535 receive this relief every year and the Council proactively encourages eligible firms to apply.
Through the Council's Partners for Growth scheme, small and medium sized companies can apply for an interest-free loan and free expert advice to pursue a growth opportunity.
A free Business Information Service is provided at Chatham Library, aimed at all stages of business development, from startups to expanding firms and Medway's Innovation Centre provides facilities for start-up companies from hot desks to corporate accommodation.
Leisure
Residents have access to our value for money Council services. You can save money by borrowing a book or hiring a DVD or a CD from your nearest library or take advantage of one of the leisure facilities. If you're under 16 or over 60, you can swim for free.
The Conservative run Medway Council also holds a number of free festivals and events throughout the year including the Sweeps, Dickens and Fuse festivals.
Travel
Through the Council's half-price bus scheme, students can save money on their travel within Medway. The over 60’s can use buses for free under Medway's extended service from 9am in the morning.
Improving energy efficiency
The Coldbusters scheme assists those on benefits to install energy saving measures such as energy efficient bulbs, loft and cavity wall insulation. They not only help keep residents warm during the winter but save money too.
