Making a difference to the people of Medway
Scouts do a good turn in the community
Press release posted on Friday, 3 July 2009
Walderslade based Beavers, Cubs and Scouts supported by Leaders, Parents and Adult Helpers turned out in force at the weekend to do a good turn in the community.
Sarah Horne, Group Scout Leader of 41st Medway Towns Scout Group picked up on the idea from the young members and immediately sought help by contacting David Brake the Walderslade Ward Conservative Councillor, himself involved in Medway Towns scouting. Councillor Brake spoke with Medway Council and requested permission for the scouts to plant new plants and flowers in Walderslade Village.
Plants and flowers were due to be planted this month and Medway Council supplied a whole range of plants and helped with staff showing the scouts how best to do the job.
Local residents, shop and office staff watched in amazement as the scouts tackled the job in hand with so much enthusiasm. Paul Loader, Manager of Martin's Newsagents remarked how well the scouts had gone about the work. "They turned up with forks, trowels and water containers. They prepared the flower beds, added compost and in no time at all were planting an array of flowers."
"The scouts really enjoyed themselves." said Sarah Horne. "It was something different for them to do and at the end of the day, Walderslade Village looks better and brighter."
Councillor Brake together with District Commissioner Mark Phillips and PPC Tracey Crouch, helped out with the planting. In thanking the scouts for their hard work, Cllr. Brake told the scouts their efforts would be appreciated by the community at large.
