Making a difference to the people of Medway

Conservatives praise new waste contract for commitment to weekly collection. Labour and Liberals oppose resident choice over wheelie bins

Press release posted on Wednesday, 8 July 2009

Cllr Roy Hunter Residents in Medway will continue to receive a weekly bin collection, thanks to their Conservative Council.

Householders were also promised a choice over wheelie bins – a move which was bitterly opposed by Liberal and Labour councillors.

During the debate on the proposed new waste contract at a meeting of the Regeneration Overview and Scrutiny Committee last night (7 July 2009) Conservative councillors welcomed the commitment of the Council to the weekly collection of waste.

Despite spurious claims from the Labour group, Medway’s Conservative Council has not introduced fortnightly waste collection nor does it have plans to do so.

The new waste contract also proposes to give residents the option of choosing a wheelie bin so that the Council can offer householders a flexible service which caters to their needs. If residents choose to continue using black sacks they can.

Unfortunately these proposals were not supported by opposition politicians who spoke against plans to offer choice to residents over wheelie bins in Medway. Questions remain whether Labour and Liberals councillors would rather force all residents to have wheelie bins instead of allowing them a choice.

Chairman of the Committee Cllr Roy Hunter said:

“The Council is proposing a new waste contract which will give residents the flexibility of having a wheelie bin if they wish and reiterates the Conservatives long running commitment to weekly bin collection for every household in Medway, which is very welcome news.”
