Making a difference to the people of Medway

Road improvements will continue despite spending cuts

Press release posted on Thursday, 1 July 2010

Cllr Phil Filmer Cllr Phil Filmer, the Portfolio Holder for Front Line Services, has reassured residents that despite the recent public spending cuts, Medway Council will maintain its spending levels on roads and pavements so that the real investment and improvements that have been made in Medway will continue.

Cllr Filmer said:

"last year close to 50 roads were resurfaced throughout Medway thanks to more than £2.7 million worth of investment by the local council and we also improved 54 pavements.

"This year, at least 37 roads will be repaired and an additional £330,000 has been added to address the damage caused by the worst winter weather seen in 25 years.

"The proportion of roads requiring maintenance has halved since 2006, with only 4% requiring work. This is thanks to the additional resources that we have put into this area of £4 million over two years.

"Medway Council is responsible for approximately 600 miles of road and 1200 miles of pavement and is working hard to maintain and improve our infrastructure".
