Rainham clock ticks again thanks to local Conservative councillors

Press release posted on Thursday, 22 April 2010

Rainham Clock goes up A historic clock in Rainham High Street has been restored thanks to local Conservative councillors.

The 1953 Coronation clock above Barclays Bank was saved after Rainham councillors clubbed together to raise £3000 for its restoration.

Joining fellow councillors on an inspection of the new clock, Conservative councillor for Rainham Central Cllr Rehman Chishti commented “this clock has been an important part of Rainham’s heritage for more than 50 years, and thanks to the support of the local Conservative councillors, we’ve been able to restore it to its former glory.”

Rainham North councillor Vaughan Hewett said, “We are very pleased that we were able to use this money to get this much loved landmark restored in Rainham High Street, which residents do appreciate.”

Cllr Barry Kemp from Rainham Central said, “it is an amenity that has been sorely missed for a number of years and its restoration has been warmly received by all residents in Rainham”.

Work has now been completed to replace the clock’s mechanism and to re-fabricate the clock.

It will also use the latest technology. The Clock will be radio controlled so the time will change automatically when the clocks go forward and back in the spring and autumn.
