Rainham clock to be restored thanks to Conservative councillors

Press release posted on Wednesday, 4 November 2009

Rainham Clock The 1953 Coronation clock in Rainham High Street is to tick again thanks to local Conservative councillors.

Conservatives from Rainham North and Rainham Central wards have clubbed together to give £3000 towards the restoration of the clock.

Thanks to Cllrs David Carr, Rehman Chishti, Vaughan Hewett, Barry Kemp and Mike O’Brien, it will once again tell the time within the next 8 weeks.

Work will begin tomorrow (Thursday 5th November) with the removal of the clock so that the mechanism can be replaced and the case re-fabricated.

The refurbished clock will use the latest technology. It will be radio controlled so when the clocks change in the spring and autumn, this will be done automatically and the clock will always be in time.

Rainham North councillor Cllr Vaughan Hewett said:

“The clock has been an important part of Rainham’s High Street for more than 50 years and I am glad we have been able to use this money to restore this invaluable piece of local heritage.”

Rainham Central councillor Cllr Mike O’Brien said:

“I, and my ward colleagues, are pleased to be able to support the people of Rainham in restoring what has become a much loved landmark in Rainham High Street”.
